The Indigo region is situated in the north-eastern part of Victoria, Australia. The area encompasses the Alpine and Rutherglen regions and is home to some of the state's most fascinating history.

The first people to inhabit the Indigo region were the Wiradjuri people who are believed to have lived in the area for thousands of years. However, it wasn't until the arrival of Europeans that the area saw major changes.

The first Europeans to settle in the Indigo region were pastoralists and miners who came in search of grazing land and gold. In 1836, the first European settlement was established in the area by Robert Reid, a Scottish pastoralist.

The discovery of gold in the 1850s saw a major influx of people to the region, with the population increasing rapidly. The town of Beechworth quickly became the commercial centre of the region and the gold mining capital of Victoria.

During this time, the region was also home to some of Victoria's most infamous bushrangers, including Ned Kelly and his gang. In 1880, Kelly was captured in the nearby town of Glenrowan and was later hanged in Melbourne.

The late 1800s also saw the development of the timber industry in the region. The forests were an important source of timber for building and mining, and the railway was built to transport the timber out of the area.

Following World War II, the region experienced significant growth in agriculture and viticulture. The rich soil and favourable climate made the area ideal for growing grapes, and many vineyards were established.

The Indigo region is now known for its award-winning wineries, stunning natural beauty and rich history. Visitors can explore the many historic sites and landmarks, including the Beechworth Historic Park, Ned Kelly's Armour and the Rutherglen Wine Experience and Visitor Information Centre.

In recent years, there has been a renewed appreciation of the region's Indigenous heritage. The Wiradjuri people are now recognised as the traditional owners of the land and their culture and history are being celebrated.

The Indigo region is a unique and fascinating part of Victoria, with a rich history that has shaped the area into what it is today. It is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, nature and wine.
